The Supreme Court will communicate its decision regarding the Constitutional changes to the President and Speaker today. The Bench comprising Justice Dr. Shirani A. Bandaranayake, Justice K. Sripavan, Justice P. A. Ratnayake PC, Justice S. I. Imam and Justice Suresh Chandra directed Attorney General President’s Counsel Mohan Pieris and the other Counsel who appeared for several other parties to submit their written submissions before 10 a.m. today. The main Constitutional changes are the removal of the two term restriction on the Presidency, reorganization of the Independent Commissions under the 17th Amendment and enabling the President to sit in Parliament, once in three months.

National Farmers’ Week begins from today under the title of ‘Youthful farmers will make a prosperous future’. To mark this week an agricultural exhibition has been organised in the agricultural training and research centre in Bata-atha in the Hambantota district. President Mahinda Rajapaksa will declare open the exhibition today. The exhibition which is consists of 100 stalls is very much important for the school children and youths. In line with the opening ceremony of the week two cycle races will be started at the Matara town at 7.00 am today. In addition, an awareness programme to educate school children on the use of local food and to encourage public to produce more local food will be conducted during the week.

Price of Laughe domestic gas cylinder has decreased by 46 rupees with effect from midnight tonight. Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority Roomy Marshook says new price of a Laughe gas cylinder is 1,593 rupees. However, the price of Shell gas cylinder remains the same.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa says it is important that the development activities should be carried out under a proper plan. An era has dawned to steer the country towards development. Therefore, all should be committed to carry forward the development programmes throughout the island. The President made these observations at the progress review meeting of the Sabaragamuwa province held in Ratnapura today. The President further said that development projects should be accelerated for the benefit of the public. The President declared opened the Ratnapura Hotel School constructed at a cost of 100 million rupees. All councillors and ministers of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council participated at the meeting.

All unauthorized structures that were erected under political influence during several past governments will be removed, Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa said while attending a Development Committee meeting in Wattala today.

The Minister added that because of these unauthorized structures the canals in urban areas were being obstructed and flooding takes place even during a minor rain.

China has granted scholarships for another batch of 100 Sri Lankan students for higher education in China. The visiting Chinese delegation headed by Yunnan Province Governor Qin Guangrong revealed this fact when he met Prime Minister D.M. Jayarathne at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Colombo this evening. The delegation held talks with the premier to enhance trade and cultural relations between the two countries. The Prime Minister tanks the Chinese Governor for his intervention to start direct flights between the two countries. He said that trade and tourism affairs between the two countries will be increased in the future.

President Mahinda Rajapakse will preside over the 59th anniversary meeting of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party at the Temple Trees on Thursday. General Secretary of the Party and Minister Maithreepala Sirisena at the media briefing said the party founded in 1951 by late Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike was able to create extensive social economic and cultural changes in the country. Later the party was led by late Prime Minister Sirimawo Bandaranaike and in 1994 former President Chandrika Bandaranaike became the leader. President Mahinda Rajapaksa took the reins of the party in 2005. It is significant that the present government led by the SLFP and under the leadership of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa had managed to eliminate three decades long terrorism. Liberation of the motherland from the grip of terrorism led the President for a second term with an enormous majority. The SLFP now has 118 members in the parliament. It is for the first time a political party in the country produces such a number of parliamentarians. The Minister further said that according to the new constitutional changes a person can contest for the presidential election for any amount of terms as he wishes. Public franchise is supreme since the public will be able to directly elect the President of the country.
