Construction work of South Asia’s largest Fishery Harbour is nearing completion at Dikovita. Construction work of this harbour commenced in the year 2008 and the total cost of the project will amount to 8,500 million rupees. The harbour will contribute to the Mahinda Chinthana Objective of providing cheap fish to the people in the country. The facilities available in the harbour will include anchoring for multi-day fishing boats, cold storage and fish packing areas. The harbour is being constructed in accordance with European Commission specifications. The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources says that the new harbour will also help international fishing activities.

At close of trade today, the Colombo Stock Exchange Index stood at 5,139.42 this is an increase of 140.32 compared to the previous day. The Milanka Index increased by 152.81 reaching 5,822. This is the first time that the Colombo Stock Exchange and Milanka indices increased to over 5,000. Trading today amounted to 1.68 trillion rupees.

Medical Officer of the Colombo Municipal Council Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam says  the programme to eradicate spread of dengue disease in the Colombo is being implemented under two stages.  The contributions of schools, medical and nursing students  are being sought for the success of this programme.  He also said that it has been identified that  there are several mosquito breeding places in the city.  Dr. Kariyawasam added that a cleaning programme will be carried out in Slave island and Welikanda areas  on Saturday.  The public support is needed to eradicate this menace.

“Tharunyata Hetak” organisation  requests the  government  to appoint an independent commission  to conduct  impartial  investigation into the death of   an undergrad  in the Ruhunu University .In a communiqué the organisation   accused the JVP of attempting to  mislead the  university students so gain cheap political mileage. Meanwhile minister Keheliya Rambukwella says government has taken maximum measures in this connection under the prevailing law.  Any person  who is familiar with the incident will be able to  give evidence  at the  magistrate inquiry to be held in due course.

Attorney At- Law  Gomin  Dayasiri  stresses that a new set of regulations should be introduced on non-governmental organisations in the country.   Mr. Gomin is the chief of the committee analysing laws relating to the NGOs.  He also said a report has already been submitted regarding the existing law in this connection.

Japan says Sri Lanka is heading towards a rapid development target following the elimination of terrorism. Tourism and Transport Minister of Japan Seiji Maihara says therefore Japan will extend it fullest support to Sri Lanka’s development activities. The Japanese Minister made these comments when he met the visiting Sri Lankan ministers Basil Rajapaksa and Professor G.L. Peiris. The Minister further said that his government is fully satisfied with the measures taken by the Sri Lankan government to resettle the IDPs in the North and East. The two Sri Lankan ministers will meet several more Japanese ministers and high state officials today.

The US and Canadian  top security officials stressed that  they leave no room to vessel “MV Sun”  to enter into their territorial waters. The vessel which is sailing off British Colombia sea coast  is alleged  to  carrying  a group of pro-LTTE supporters . Expressing views to the Toronto Star news paper  the US and Canadian officials  have said that the two countries have already beefed up  security in   their  territorial waters.
