Another 27 houses, built under the Second phase of the Api Wenuwen Api program was handed over to the war heroes under the aegis of President Mahinda Rajapaksa today. Under the programme 700 houses will be built for war heroes at district level. Director General of the Media Centre for National Security Lakshman Hulugalla said that one housing unit worth more than 2.5 million rupees. He also added that 50 thousand housing units will be constructed for the war heroes under the Mahinda Chinthana policy manifesto. The first phase of this program was completed on July 11 with President Mahinda Rajapaksa handing over the keys of 25 houses in Senarathgama, Kandy to war heroes. The Api Wenuwen Api fund has collected 700 million rupees with the contributions made by the public living in Sri Lanka and overseas at the request of President Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Ghotabhaya Rajapaksa. |

625 graduates are to be recruited for the teaching service in the Western Province. |

Another batch of 625 graduates will be recruited to the teaching service in the Western Province. Appointment letters will be handed over to 325 graduates of the batch under the patronage of Minister Basil Rajapaksa tomorrow. Additional Secretary to the Western Provincial Education Ministry G. Sedarahetti told SLBC that rest of selected graduates will also be given appointment letters by December. Mr. Sedarahetti explained that 500 vacancies in the teaching service emerge annually in the Western Province. The vacancies are filled by a competitive examination. Meanwhile, the Department of Examination announces that competitive examination to recruit aesthetic graduates to the teaching service will be held on October 9. |

The Sri Lanka independent workers union sad that the working people is extending support for the new constitutional amendment. General secretary of the Union Lesli Devendra said the amendments will further establish the people’s supremacy and democracy. It is an important feature of the president attending the Paliamentary sessions. It is a rare occurrence of a country receiving able leadership. Countries such as Singapore and Malaysia achieved rapid progress due to efficient leaders staying in power for a longer period. |

Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena says that proposals are now being gathered by various segments of the society to formulate a new education reform policy. The Minister added that 400 organisations are ready to give their suggestions to the Parliament Advisory Council which was appointed to inquire envisaged reforms. The Minister further said that individuals in the society representing all walks of the life including religious leaders, intellectuals, and politicians have already submitted their suggestions to the advisor council. A great deal of ideas has already been received on reforming grade five scholarship examination. The Minister pointed out that psychologists and experts in education have proposed to hold the scholarship examination at grade seven instead of grade five. |

The members Lakshman Senevirathna, Earl Gunasekara and Manusha Nanayakkara enlightened the media in this regard yesterday. Mr. Lakshman senevirathna seid the opposition at this juncture must support the government. Indian Army Commander General Vijey Kumar Singh will arrive in the island tomorrow on a 5 day official visit along with 10 other army officials. The Sri Lanka army headquarters says the objective of the visit is to strengthen mutual understanding and co-operation between the Army’s of the two countries. This is the highest ranking delegation Indian army officials to arrive since the dawn of peace in Sri Lanka. |
