The United National Party Parliamentarians who crossed over to the government says that it is not wrong for the people friendly leader to contest any number of times for the presidency. MP Abdul Khadar says that the amendment will pave the way for any leader in the future to honour the opinion of the people. Parliamentarian Lakshman Senevirathne disclosed that he supported the amendment since it enforced peoples’ sovereignty completely. MP Manusha Nanayakkara pointed out that the passing of the amendment was a victory for the people. Parliamentarian Upeksha Swarnamali said that she would lend her support to all people friendly decisions. They expressed their views to the media after passing the constitutional amendment in parliament.

Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva says that a number of shortcomings in the 17th amendment to the constitution has been rectified in a 18th amendment. He expressed his appreciation for all those who supported to pass the amendment. Minister Susil Premajayanth pointed out that it was a significant victory for the government since it was able to pass the amendment with a majority of more than two thirds. Minister Basil Rajapaksa said that the aim of new amendments was the welfare of the people. Minister S.B. Dissanayake pointed out that the boycott of the UNP at such a crucial moment was a confirmation of the defeat of the UNP. Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka expressing his views said that passing of a constitutional amendment with the agreement of all parties concerned was a clear trend in politics at present. Deputy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said that passing of the amendment was a victory for the government.
