India facing the 'worst water crisis in its history

India is facing its worst-ever water crisis, with some 600 million people facing acute water shortage, a government think-tank says.
The Niti Aayog report, which draws on data from 24 of India's 29 states, says the crisis is "only going to get worse" in the years ahead.
It also warns that 21 cities are likely to run out of ground water by 2020 despite increasing demand.
This would also threaten food security as 80 percent of water is used in agriculture.
Indian cities and towns regularly run out water in the summer because they lack the infrastructure to deliver piped water to every home.

Antarctica loses three trillion tonnes of ice in 25 years

Antarctica is shedding ice at an accelerating rate. Satellites monitoring the state of the White Continent indicate some 200 billion tonnes a year are now being lost to the ocean as a result of melting. This is pushing up global sea levels by 0.6mm annually - a three-fold increase since 2012 when the last such assessment was undertaken. Scientists report the new numbers in the journal Nature. Governments will need to take account of the information and its accelerating trend as they plan future defences to protect low-lying coastal communities.

Divisions between Donald Trump and the other leaders of the G7 nations have been laid bare at a summit in Canada.The US leader made a surprise call for Russia to be readmitted to the group of top industrialised nations after its expulsion for annexing Crimea. But German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the EU members attending the summit all agreed it should not happen. Frictions over trade tariffs recently imposed by the Trump administration are overshadowing the summit.

North Korea leader may get US invite for talks.

US President Donald Trump said he would consider inviting North Korea's Kim Jong-un to the White House if their summit in Singapore goes well. Mr Trump made the comment after meeting Japan's PM Shinzo Abe to discuss the 12 June summit. He said it was possible an agreement to end the Korean War could be reached, though he called that "the easy part" of the negotiations.

New explosion at Guatemalan volcano

Emergency services in Guatemala are evacuating areas around the Fuego Volcano, after a new eruption sent lava spewing down its south side. At least 72 deaths have been reported since the volcano first erupted on Sunday. More than 3,000 people have been evacuated. Villages on the slopes of the volcano have been buried in volcanic ash and mud.
