Stan Lee: Marvel Comics legend dies aged 95

American writer and former president of Marvel Comics Stan Lee has died at the age of 95.In 1961, Lee created The Fantastic Four for Marvel Comics, and went on to create titles including Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk.

Rains and floods kill nine and force tourists to flee Petra. Jordan

Heavy rains and flooding killed at least nine people in Jordan and forced authorities to evacuate more than 3,700 tourists from the ancient city of Petra Yesterday. The visitors were taken to safe areas before flash floods inundated parts of the mountainous city famed for its carved rock ruins.

Government spokesperson Jumana Ghunaimat said two women and a girl were killed in Madaba province when their vehicle was swept away. He said nine people were admitted to hospital, including some in critical condition.

US proposes rule banning asylum for illegal migrants

Illegal migrants entering through the southern US border will no longer be eligible for asylum under a new rule, the Trump administration has said. Announced by the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, the ruling would stop asylum for those who breach any presidential restriction on entry.

The president can stop migration in the "national interest", a statement said. Immigration was a major focus in President Trump's 2018 mid-term election campaign.

Trump fires Attorney General Jeff Sessions

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been fired by President Donald Trump. "We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well!" Mr Trump tweeted on Wednesday. The president had repeatedly criticised his top law enforcement official after he recused himself from the Russia investigation dogging the White House. Mr Trump said Mr Sessions will be temporarily replaced by his chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, who has criticised the Russia inquiry

German Catholic priests 'abused thousands of children'

More than 3,600 children in Germany were assaulted by Roman Catholic priests between 1946 and 2014, a leaked report has revealed.The study was commissioned by the Church itself, and was due to be published on 25 September. According to the report, some 1,670 clergymen in Germany committed some form of sex attack on 3,677 minors, German outlet Spiegel Online reported. A Church spokesman said it was "dismayed and ashamed" by the findings.

Kabul suicide bomber kills 48 in tuition centre attack

Forty-eight people have been killed and 67 injured in a bomb explosion at an education centre in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, officials say. Police say a suicide bomber walked into the centre while teaching was under way and detonated his bomb belt. Many of those killed were teenagers who were getting extra tuition as they prepared for university entrance exams. Italy Bridge rescuers search into the night in Genoa

Rescuers in the northwest Italian city of Genoa are searching into the night for possible survivors after the dramatic collapse of a motorway bridge. Police say at least 26 people were killed and 15 badly hurt, when dozens of vehicles fell 148 feet. Reports say cries can be heard from people trapped in the debris. Twelve people are said to be missing. Some 300 firefighters from across Italy have been using sniffer dogs and climbing gear in the search.

North Korea appears to be building new ballistic missiles despite recent warming ties with the Trump administration and pledges to denuclearise, reports say. Unnamed US officials told the Washington Post that spy satellites had spotted continuing activity at a site that has produced ballistic missiles. Reuters quotes an official as saying it is unclear how far the work has gone. Donald Trump met North Korea's Kim Jong-un in Singapore in June.

Imran Khan will be sworn in as Pakistan's new Prime Minister before the country's Independence Day on August 14th. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, has made the announcement as it is trying to reach out to smaller parties and independents to form the next government. The PTI has emerged as the single largest party in the National Assembly after the July 25th elections. However, the party is still short of numbers to form a government on its own. PTI leader Naeenul Haq told the media that consultations are on to complete the number game.
