Excellent sports men and women were felicitated by the president.

President Maithripala Sirisena says from the 'Presidential Sports Awards' he expects to praise the commitments made by the spots men and women to sports sector. This ceremony will pave the way for a healthy and disciplined society. 2016 Presidential Sports Awards ceremony was held at the BMICH in Colombo yesterday under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena. Addressing the gathering the president added that the government has provided modern state of art facilities for the sports men and women. The aim is the government to develop the sports sector by covering entire society. Personal grudges of the sports men and women and officials and politicians are the main obstacle of the sports sector to go forward independently. The President further added that shortcomings in the training and administration of sports sector have also become a problem today. The government has taken measures to improve quality of sports by setting up sports complexes at regional and national level. The unique sportsman award given to Swimming Champion Mathew Abeysinghe. W. K Nimali Liyanrachchi was the sports woman of the year. Several other sports personnel were also awarded. SLBC has also received a award for best radio sports program. Addressing the gathering Minister Dayasiri Jayaseka said that a program is now underway to introduce school level sports men and women to international level.
