The stay order preventing the election of office bearers to Sri Lanka Cricket, removed

The stay order imposed by the Court of Appeals temporary suspending the Election of Office Bearers to Sri Lanka Cricket, has been removed. The Court had issued the order, upon taking up for examination, the petition filed by a former cricketer and Nishantha Ranathunge who is contesting for the presidency, seeking the prevention of the present President: Thilanga Sumathipala running for office. As the petitioner and respondent's party agreed to call for a new election, the court ordered the stay order to be removed. The Court of Appeals notified the Attorney General to present the agenda for a new election, when the petition is taken up for hearing on the fourth of next month.

The 2nd test between Sri Lanka and West Indies will start today

The 2nd test between Sri Lanka and West Indies will start today at Gros Islet. The match will commence at 7.30 PM Sri Lankan time. Sri Lanka lost the first test by 226 runs and expected to put up a better performance this time. Meanwhile former captain Anjelo Mathews has returned to the island to see the new born baby. This could be another setback to the Sri Lanka's batting outfit. However Danushka and Dasun Shanaka will be travelling to west indies as replacements for Anjelo and injured Lahiru gamage.

The 2018 Fifa World Cup kicks off today

The 2018 Fifa World Cup gets under way today when hosts Russia face Saudi Arabia following an opening ceremony at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. Football's showpiece event features 32 teams, including holders Germany, competing in 64 games over 32 days. The 21st edition will be played out in 12 stadiums, across 11 cities, spread over 1,800 miles. England, winners in 1966, is the only team from the home nations to qualify and start against Tunisia on 18 June.The first match between Russia and Saudi Arabia will commence at 8.30PM Russian time today.

The 21st World Cup Football tournament begins in Russia on Thursday

The 21st World Cup Football tournament organized by the World Football Federation will begin on Thursday in Russia.  The tournament starts with a match between host Russia and Saudi Arabia. The tournament includes with 64 matches. The final match will be played on the 5th of July. The tournament  is organized in every four years and last time it was held in Brazil.

Vijayabahu Motorcross to be held on the 17th of June

The Vijayabahu Motorcross organised by the Sri Lanka Racing Drivers' Association will be held on the 17th of June at the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment premises in Boyagane-Kurunegala. Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana speaking at a media briefing said, 80 motor cyclists representing the army, and from all areas of the country, will participate.

Gary Kirsten most likely to be Bangladesh Coach.

Discussions are at its final stages to enrol Gary Kirsten of South Africa for the post of Bangladesh Coach. At present he functions as the coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. He is expected to arrive in Bangladesh on the 21st of May. Australia and England have also proposed names for the post.

A Beach Volleyball court is to be constructed in every district

A Beach Volleyball court is to be constructed in every district, with the intention of upgrading the sport to high standards. Chairman of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation: Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya announced this decision, at a press briefing held in Colombo today to brief the media on the upcoming 2018 Sunquick National Beach Volleyball Championship. The grand final of this championship will be held at the new artificial beach volleyball court at the Sugathadasa Stadium, on the 19th of this month.

The South Asian Junior Athletics Championship 2018 to be held on the 5th and 6th of this month at the Sugathadasa Stadium

South Asian Junior Athletics Championship 2018 will be held on the 5th and 6th of this month at the Sugathadasa stadium. Over 250 performers representing 7 countries will participate. A formidable team of 54 athletes from India is expected. The foreign teams will arrive in the Island tomorrow. This is the 1st international sports event that is being held at the Sugathadasa Stadium after the new track was laid.

One day matches of the Super Four Provincial Cricket Tournament, begin on Wednesday.

One day matches of the Super Four Provincial Cricket Tournament, begin on Wednesday. The Colombo Team, Galle Team, Kandy Team and the Dambulla team will be participating. Dinesh Chandimal will captain the Colombo Team, while Upul Tharanga will lead the Galle Team. Angelo Mathews will be the Captain of the Kandy Team, and Kusal Janith Perera will provide leaderships for the Dambulla Team.

The match between Colombo and Dambulla will be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday.
