Birmingham will host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Birmingham will host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The bidding process to select a host city had been beset with problems. The South African city of Durban was awarded the Games in 2015 before being stripped of the event because it did not meet the Commonwealth Games Federation criteria.

After Birmingham's bid was initially deemed "not fully compliant", previously interested cities such as Victoria in Canada and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia were given another two months to apply. However, no bids materialised.

Now, Birmingham has been confirmed as the host of the 750 million pound event.

Birmingham's mayor Andy Street described the announcement as a "fantastic Christmas present for their region".
