US swimmers were not robbed, says Rio police chief.

Four US Olympic gold medal swimmers who said they had been robbed in Rio de Janeiro were not victims of crime, the head of the city's civil police says. Fernando Veloso told reporters that one or more of the men had instead vandalised part of a petrol station and then offered to pay for the damage.

Chinese diver Ren Qian won Olympic gold at the age of 15 as Britain's Tonia Couch finished out of the medals in the 10m platform competition. Ren took the lead after the third of five dives and a superb inward three-and-a-half somersault with her fourth virtually clinched the title.

Japanese wrestler Kaori Icho has become the first woman to win individual gold medals at four consecutive Olympics. The 32-year-old beat Russia's Valeria Koblova to win the -58kg freestyle wrestling division in Rio - as she has in every Games since Athens 2004.

Female wrestler Sakshi Malik gives first Rio Olympic medal to India.

Female wrestler Sakshi Malik has delivered India its first medal of the 2016 Rio Games, sending a nation into ecstasy. After a gritty performance at the 58 kilogram women's wrestling category, she won bronze, becoming the first Indian female wrestler and the fourth Indian woman to win an Olympic medal.

Malik was born in India's Haryana state, where women were for some time not allowed to take part in wrestling events. The 23-year-old started training young, having gained support from her parents to pursue the sport.

Media reports say locals initially berated her parents, telling them that their daughter would become undesirable to potential suitors. But she went on to earn a silver medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and walked away with the bronze at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
Malik comes from the district of Rohtak, which gained notoriety in 2014, after two sisters fought back against a group of men who accosted them on a public bus.

Meanwhile, Jamaica's Elaine Thompson has won Olympic gold in the 200 meters to complete a sprint double in Rio. Thompson who is 24, clocked 21.78 seconds to beat Netherlands' world champion Dafne Schippers by 0.13 seconds and add the 200 meter title to the gold she won in the 100 meters.

SL sets a target of 324 runs for Aussies.

Sri Lanka have declared their 2nd innings at 347 for the loss of 8 wickets setting a target of 324 runs for victory to Australia on the final day of the 3rd and final Test played at the SSC. Australians  reached 77 for the loss of one wicket at lunch They require another 247 runs for victory.

Laura Trott becomes first British woman to win four gold medals with omnium victory.

Laura Trott has become the first British woman to win four Olympic gold medals by defending her omnium title. The world champion, 24, moves ahead of Charlotte Dujardin, who won her third Olympic gold with victory in the individual dressage. She scored 230 points to win the title by 24 from American Sarah Hammer.

Silva century gives Sri Lanka 288-run lead.


For the past three weeks, Kaushal Silva has been stuck in an unhappy singles party that threatened never to end. Four, 7, 5, 2 and 0 - those were his scores for this series. Remember that Silva is an opening batsman. For an opening batsman, such numbers are not good. They are not even good enough to be called "not bad". In his final innings of the series, Silva again did not make a double-figure score, and Sri Lanka were thrilled.

3rd test SL vs Aus : Expects batsmen to perform more - SL head coach

Today is the 4th day of the third test between Sri Lankan and Australia played at the SSC. Sri Lanka who were playing their second innings were 22 for the loss of one wicket at stumps on day three. The Australian team scored 379 runs for their first innings yesterday.

Rangana Herath smashed 6 Australian wickets.


In reply to the Sri Lanka's first innings score of 355, Australia scored 379 runs all out in the 3rd Test of the Australia tour of Sri Lanka. Shaun Marsh scored 130 runs, Steven Smith scored 119 and Mitchell March scored 53 runs. Sri Lankan spinner Rangana Herath smashed 6 Australian wickets.

Sri Lanka were 300 runs for 7 wickets at lunch of the 2nd day in the first innings of the 3rd and final test against Australia played in SSC grounds Colombo. Dhananjaya Silva 129 runs and Dinesh Chandimal 105 runs not out.

Michael Phelps beaten in 100 meter butterfly event.


Singapore's Joseph Schooling won his nation's first ever Olympic gold medal with victory in the 100 meters butterfly as Michael Phelps was one of three men to finish joint second. Schooling who is 21, won in an Olympic record time of 50.39 seconds. The Singaporean was always in control and won by 0.75 seconds from the trio of Phelps, South Africa's Chad le Clos and Hungary's Laszlo Cseh.
