The President says a development programme on a long term plan will eliminate poverty

President Maithripala Sirisena says the government is implementing a development programme on a long term plan that will eliminate poverty. The intention is to ensure that every citizen enjoys dividends of development. The President was speaking at the setting up of a Sri Lanka Freedom Party Bala Mandalaya in Polonnaruwa yesterday.

He went on to say that the 'Grama Shakthi' poverty alleviation exercise was progressing successfully island wide. Soon, the 'Gam Peraliya' programme to transform rural development will be kicked off. The President also said a loan scheme for entrepreneurs would be introduced as well.

Speaking further, he said the National Economic Council would assist in economic development while resolving issues of the public. He added that the taxes on imported fruits would be increased in order to protect the local cultivators.
