The President gives instructions to let the two rare elephants found in the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, to continue to remain there

President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the Secretary to the Environment Ministry and the Director General of the Department of Forest Conservation to let the two rare elephants found in the Sinharaja Forest Reserve to continue to remain there. The President further advised, should the elephants be relocated, it should be done upon a scientific basis, and by individuals who have a specialized knowledge in the subject. He emphasized the need to conserve the country's elephants in their own habitat. He also instructed the relevant officials to construct security fences to prevent these two elephants wondering into populated areas. The President highlighted the need to protect the Sinharaja Forest which is high in bio-diversity.
