A State of Emergency has been declared taking into consideration the unsatisfactory security situation in certain areas in the country.

President Maithripala Sirisena has promulgated a State of Emergency to address the unsatisfactory security situation prevailing in certain parts of the country. The Police & Armed Forces have been suitably empowered to deal with criminal elements in society and to urgently restore normalcy.

The President has given instructions to defence units to enforce the law against anyone involved in criminal activities or in enticing racial and religious discord, irrespective of their ethnic or religious identity or political affiliations.

The President also advises that operations should be conducted in a manner with the least inconvenience to the general public. He emphasized that Violation of Human Rights must not take place at any cost.
