Minister Rauf Hakeem speaking in parliament today emphasized that the country should defeat all nefarious motives that seek to bring about instability, economic crisis and an adverse reputation to the country in the international arena. At this moment, when the government is focused upon bringing about reconciliation among the communities, attempts made to cause division among the races must be defeated. In order to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future, it is necessary to dispel fear and suspicion from the minds of the citizens. He further stated that a presidential commission needs to be appointed to probe into the incidents that occurred in the Ampara and Digana areas.

Joining in the debate, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe observed that the incidents that took place during the past few days are not 'instant upheavals'. Those defeated are making frantic efforts to consolidate power by enticing racism and violence. These are pre-meditated tactics. He highlighted the fact that a country that has suffered a three-decade--long conflict, knows the value of 'peace' only too well. The premier highly appreciated the steps taken by the police and defense units in establishing law and order.
