February 18th of the year has been declared as the national day for the persons who donate human organs.

18th of February in each year will be declared as the national day of the persons who donate human organs. This decision has been taken by a team of surgeons at the Sri Jayewardenepura hospital. At a press briefing held at the hospital premises yesterday they said that a march will be held from the Diyawanna cafeteria complex in Madiwela to the hospital premises on the 189th of February under the patronage of the President and the health minister. A monument in remembrance of the persons who donated organs will also be unveiled by the President. The consultant doctors said that kidneys, liver, Spleen, lungs, heart, intestines and skin of a person who died due to the damages of the brain can be transplanted to other patients. But, organs of such a patients should be removed within three hours of the dead.
