Minister Dr. Rajitha Senarathne says he is prepared to provide relief assistance based on the request of the affected soft drink companies.

Minister Dr. Rajitha Senarathne says he is prepared to provide relief assistance based on the request of the soft drink companies. According to the new regulations 50 cents tax will be imposed to each gram of sugar in soft drink bottles. However, the soft drink manufacturing companies have requested the Minister to provide an alternative relief assistance for this problem. As a result Minister Rajitha Senerathne has come forward to provide some relief assistance to the soft drink companies which lose a reasonable amount on each soft drink bottle.

The Minister further said a series of awareness programmes are being conducted islandwide to educate the public on the sugar content of soft drink bottles. According to the reports from WHO, around 70 percent of the world population is affected by non-communicable diseases each year.
