The President states that he will stepdown only after effectively punishing corrupt politicians.

President Maithripala Sirisena says that he will leave the office only after punishing corrupt politicians in the country. At a meeting held in the Kosgama area yesterday the President said he is even ready to take to the streets with the people in protest against fraud and corruption. The President said that after the LG polls on February 10th, he will initiate an Anti-Corruption National Movement with the help of all politicians loyal to the country. He appealed to the general public, religious dignitaries and intellectuals to join hands with him.

We all have a great responsibility in achieving justice and good governance in Sri Lanka. Therefore, an exemplary and genuine set of politicians are needed to accomplish this great task. He added that former corrupted politicians are again seeking a mandate to rule the country. The President questioned as to whether they want to resume the lawless and dark era in the country and to be backlisted by the international community.
