The Ministry of Education has decided to begin teaching the English Language in National School, from Grade One onwards.

The Ministry of Education has decided to begin teaching English language in national school from grade one onwards. Launched upon a concept of Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, it will begin this year and be implemented fully, next year. The Ministry has also taken steps to train teachers in classes of grade one and two for the English language to be introduced to the students in a creative manner. The Educations Publications Department states that the necessary textbooks have already been printed and distributed to schools.

Although the English language is taught as a subject from grade one in private schools, in government schools the subject was introduced in grade three. It has been pointed out that since even certain government schools conduct the school curriculum in the English medium, this move will be an encouragement to students.
