A project to construct Four thousand bridges in rural areas.

Two projects to construct bridges in rural areas will be launched.  Under this project, 4,000 bridges will be constructed.  Financial assistance will be provided by Hungary and Belgium.  This has been launched upon a concept of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe.  Already two projects funded by the United Kingdom and the Netherlands for the construction of  bridges in rural areas, is underway.  In addition, a project to construct one thousand small bridges in remote areas will be launched.  The target is to complete this project within three years.   Around 2,000 risky areas have been identified across various rivers and groups.   These small bridges will be constructed at such areas to mitigate the risk posed to those who cross the rivers at these points.   The engineering  research and technology institute has invented a low cost bridge model.  This model will be constructed at the relevant locations.  Cabinet approval has been received for the proposal submitted by minister Susil Premajayantha  pertaining to these projects.
