The final report of the Presidential Investigation Committee to inquire into the losses incurred due to the collapse of the Meethotamulla Garbage Mountain, submitted to President Maithripala Sirisena, today.

The final report of the presidential investigation committee to inquire into the damages caused due to the collapse of the Meethotamulla garbage mountain, was submitted to president Maithripala Sirisena today. The committee was headed by retired appeals court judge Dr. Chandradasa Nanayakkara. The report details short term as well as long term recommendations, to rectify this issue. It points out the necessity to establish a 'controlling centre' for the disposal and management of waste in the western province. The president upon accepting this report stated that based on the recommendations necessary instructions will be given to the respective ministries in concern.

Meanwhile, the committee report also exposes an unusual increase in payments made to outside entities for the purpose of disposing waste at Meethotamulla, during the years 2015 and 2016. The report points out that the failure on the part of the Colombo Municipal Council to implement a proper strategy for garbage disposal, and the non-implementation of solutions put forward to municipal officials, were the causes that led to the Meethotamulla catastrophe.
