The Central Bank has taken effective measures to make the rupee value stable in the world market. Assistant Director of Economic Research Department Dr. Anil Perera said the Central Bank has taken effective measures to keep the rupee value stable, so that it will help to reduce the gap of Balance of Payment and trade deficit. He made these comments at a media conference held in Colombo yesterday.

It is reported the financial institutions are planing to waive off the interest of the loans less than 150,000 taken by the small scale entrepreneurs from micro finance institutions.

Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera says this decision will promote the small scale entrepreneurs. This will also help to create more entrepreneurs in future. The Minister made these remarks at a function held in Southern Province to establish 2,000 export entrepreneurs.

A special cabinet paper will be submitted to absorb 980 SAITM students into KDU.

Minister Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa says a cabinet paper will be submitted to absorb 980 qualified SAITM students into the medical faculty of Kotalawela Defense University. The minister revealed this information at a media conference held in Colombo yesterday. Addressing the gathering, the Minister further said the decision was taken in order to ease the tensed situation of the SAITM issue.  This step could be considered as a promotive action to solve this problem.

Sri Lanka is considered as the first country in the South Asian region to eliminate the child labour menace.

Minister of Labour and Labour relations Ravindra Samaraweera says people have forgotten that present government was able to increase the salaries of the government servants by 10,000 rupees and the employees of the private sector by 2,500 rupees. The minister also said there are about 1.4 million government servants working in different government sectors. He further said Sri Lanka was the first country in the South Asian region to eliminate the child labour menace. The Ambassador of ILO has informed the Minister the Sri Lanka's achievement recently during a meeting.

Civil aviation amendment Draft Bill was taken up for debate in parliament today. Presenting proposal , minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said the aim of this amendment is to prevent the behavior of obstructing the passengers by some organised groups at the Katunayake international airport at the arrival and departure terminals. 25 thousand rupee fine or six months imprisonment period can be imposed on such people.

A.H. M Fowzie was sworn in as the minister of national unity and reconciliation

A.H.M. Fowzie was sworn in as the minister of national peace and reconciliation and President's counsellor Ariya Bandara Rekawa was sworn in as the governor of Uva province before the President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential secretariat this morning.

The Gamperaliya project focused on village development will begin in August this year.


Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera says with the implementation of the fuel pricing mechanism, the prices of fuel could be increased or decreased every 2 months. The new fuel pricing mechanism was approved by the Cabinet. The price hike was felt in Sri Lanka as a result of the fuel price hike in the global market, which rose above 70 US dollars on May 8, for the first time since 2014.

He said that the Treasury will be able to save 55.89 billion rupees and the government has decided to use it for rapid development projects, such as the Gamperaliya project focused on village development which is to commence in August this year. He said that the country will witness rapid development in the coming 18 months.

The Minister also said that 2.5 percent tax on children's savings accounts will be withdrawn. He added that writers royalty fee from publishers will be tax-free up to 50,000 rupees monthly or 500,000 rupees per annum.

Prices of several more essential medicines will be reduced within next two weeks.

The Ministry of Health has decided to reduce the prices of more varieties of essential drugs with the next two weeks. The government has already reduced the prices of 18 varieties of essential medicines. Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senarathne says that maximum relief will be granted to the people under this government by further strengthening the free health service. The Minister revealed these facts participating in a ceremony organized by the Public Service United Nurses Union to mark the International Nurses Day yesterday at the BMICH in Colombo. President Maithripala Sirisena was the chief guest at this event.

Over 380,000 families will receive Samurdhi benefits under the new system which will be implemented in future.

The government has decided to prepare a new system to provide Samurdhi benefits to the low income families amounting to 1.4 million throughout the island. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe has instructed the officials to prepare this system. Accordingly, over 380,000 families who had not had the opportunity of receiving the Samurdhi benefits for over three decades even with all required qualifications will be granted the Samurdhi beneficiaries. The Ministry of social empowerment will prepare this in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.
