The President says Sri Lanka is steering as a country with full economic potential.

President Maithripala Sirisena says Sri Lanka is steering as a country with full economic potential. He added that achieving shared prosperity is Sri Lanka's primary objective. Sri Lanka seeks to benefit from the opportunities arising from cooperation while also ensuring that others in the region to benefit.


A special committee has been appointed by the Prime Minister to establish the FCID in accordance with the regulations of the police department.

State Minister Dilan Perera said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe has appointed a special committee to establish the FCID in accordance with the police department's regulations. He added that President Maithripala Sirisena's aim is to secure credibility of the judiciary system.


Duration of power cut reduced.

The Ministry of Power and Energy announces that the power-cuts scheduled for two-and-a-half hours in the morning, and an hour in the evening, had been reduced. Power and Energy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said the cuts now will last for an hour in the morning, and half-an-hour in the evening from midnight today. Earlier today, after the Mahaweli Authority agreed to release more water to generate hydropower, the Ministry of Power and Energy said the duration of power-cuts could be reduced.


24 new subjects will be introduced to the school curricula.

Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says that the best investment that any country can make is improving education sector. He added that the present government has allocated a large money for improving country's school education. Minister Kariyawasam was speaking at the prize giving ceremony of the Vishaka College Colombo.


Russian President re-affirms fullest support to SL

Russian President Vladimir Putin has commended the recent transformation Sri Lanka has undergone. He assured Russia's support to Sri Lanka at any instance it requires. The Russian leader made these remarks when he met President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday on the sidelines of the BRICS-BIMSTEC Summit being held at Indian city of Goa.


Prime Minister will hold discussions with top level of officials of European parliament in Brussels today.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe who is on an official tour to Brussels is scheduled to meet the high officials of European parliament, European commission and European union today.  These discussions will focus on regaining the GSP plus

facility to Sri Lanka. 


The process of distributing vouchers for school uniforms will commence from the first of next month.

The ministry of education says the process of distributing vouchers to purchase school uniforms will commence from the 1st of next month. The secretary to the state ministry of education Tissa Hevavithana says this voucher system has been designed effectively to provide school uniforms to the school children without any delay. 


The President says Sri Lanka is committed to set up BIMSTEC Technology Transfer Center.

President Maithripala Sirisena reiterated the commitment of the government to establish a BIMSTEC Center for Technology Transfer Facility to contribute to the collective drive for economic advancement. He said that “to take Sri Lanka to the next stage of development, the vision of my government is to create a knowledge based competitive social market economy which is integrated with the world.


Another 30 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in Tamil Nadu will return to Sri Lanka.

Another 30 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in Tamil Nadu will arrive in Sri Lanka under the UNHCR facilitated voluntary repatriation programme, the Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs said.


The President was warmly welcomed at the Bangalore Airport.

President Maithripala Sirisena who arrived in India to address the BRICS, BIMSTEC Summit was warmly welcomed in India. The President first arrived at the Bangalore Airport, yesterday and then he was taken to Goa by a special aeroplane.  Indian State Minister of External Affairs and Sri Lankan High Commissioner in India Mrs. Chithrangani Wageshwara were present there to welcome the President.

 Indian armed forces also conducted a guard of honour for the Sri Lankan leader.  President Sirisena is in India under a special invitation from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.  The President will also have bilateral talks with the Heads of States who participate in the BRICS summit.
