The Central Committee of the Podu Jana Peramuna will meet this afternoon

General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Prof.Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa says that they will contest the forthcoming general elections with a broad alliance.

Preliminary measures will be taken tomorrow to prepare nominations.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna says, it will take a decision on contesting the General Election after discussions with their Central Committee which is scheduled to be met this afternoon.

Former Chief Justice Sarath N.Silva emphasizes the 19th Amendment to the Constitution did not curtail Executive Presidential powers

Former Chief Justice Sarath N.Silva says, the 13 Amendment to the Constitution has further strengthen the powers of the executive president in connection with the legislature. The President has Constitutional Power to convene , dissolve and prorogue the Parliament.

Expressing his views to SLBC the former Chief Justice said that, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was introduced with the personal objectives of reducing powers of the Executive President.

The Lawyers Collective says that President Maithripala Sirisena has taken the correct decision on behalf of the country

Convener of the Collective Attorney-at-Law Manoj Gamage said, it was 100 percent constitutional and legal. He told the SLBC that the rulers who are not willing to seek the people’s mandate, are spreading false rumors.

Secretary to the voice for Justice Lalith Pium Perera said that, the decision which would be taken by the people, on the 5th of January will decide the future of the country.

President Maithripala Sirisena says a special programme will be implemented to resolve the issues of the gem and jewellery industry of the country

The President said that a Cabinet Sub-Committee will be appointed in this regard. He made these remarks during a meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat, yesterday to discuss about issues prevailed in the gem and jewellery industry.

The Lanka Sama Samaja Party points out that the Speaker should be independent without engaging in party politics.

Leader of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party Professor Tissa Vitharane says that it is pathetic that the Speaker is acting as the Deputy Leader of the UNP without showing his impartiality as the Speaker. No Speaker so far has challenged a decision taken by the Executive President. At a press briefing held in Colombo yesterday Professor Tissa Vitharane said that the Speaker should be independent and not be involved in party politics.

The Police Department has been taken under the Ministry of defence

An extraordinary gazette notification has been issued with the subjects and duties of the ministers appointed under the 40th article of the constitution.

Accordingly the police department has been taken under the ministry of defence. Earlier it was under the ministry of law and peace.

Mr.Wimal Weerwansa has been appointed as the minister of housing and Social Welfare

Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa has been appointed as the minister of housing and social welfare. The appointment has been made by President Maithripala Sirisena this morning.

Meanwhile, minister of international trade and investment promotions Bandula Gunawardena assumed duties this morning. He said that steps would be taken to make the economic stronger by increasing investments.
