India and Sri Lanka have agreed to set up a joint working group on Fishing activities.

India and Sri Lanka have agreed to set up a joint working group on fishing activities. Accordingly, a hot line between the coast guards of both countries have been set up to address the long standing issue of the illegal fishing in the respective sea areas. Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Sri Lankan Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera recently held talks in this connection in New Delhi.

The newly formed joint working group will meet every 3 months and the Ministers of both countries will meet every 6 months to find solutions for the problems. Accordingly, a meeting between the two Ministers will be held in January next year. They are to release the detained fishermen and the fishing vessels of both countries.
