The speaker of Iranian parliament Ali Larijhani will make an official visit Sri Lanka today. He will stay in the Island until tomorrow. During his two day short visit, he will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and Speaker Karu Jayasooriya.

The special envoy of the anti-personal mine ban convention will arrive in Sri Lanka on Monday

The Special Envoy of the Anti-personnel Mine Ban Convention, Prince Mired Raad Zeid Al-Hussein of Jordan will undertake an official visit to Sri Lanka from Monday to Wednesday.  The visit is of particular significance since Sri Lanka acceded to the Anti-personnel Mine Ban Convention on 13 December 2017 becoming its 163rd State Party. The ‘Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction’, typically referred to as the ‘Ottawa Convention’. During his visit to Sri Lanka, the Special Envoy will call on President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister . He is also scheduled to undertake a field visit to the Northern Province, accompanied by Minister D.M Swaminathan. He will witness firsthand the mine clearance activities being carried out and interact with agencies that clear mines as well as landmine victims.

32,000 students GCE A/level qualified students have applied for Colleges of education, this year

The Ministry of Education says about 32,000 students who have passed GCE A/level Examination have applied for Colleges of education, this year. Chief Commissioner of Teacher education K M S Bandara told the SLBC that new enrollments will be made in March. Many students have applied for the fields of Information Technology and Primary Education. The Ministry has increased the monthly allowance of 3500/ rupees paid for the teacher trainee students upto 5000 rupees from this month.

About 8500 students are undergoing training in 19 colleges of education, islandwide at present.

Duration to change distorted currency notes will be extended up to 31st of March

 

The governor of the Central Bank Dr. Indrajith Kumaraswamy says the duration to change distorted currency notes will be extended up to 31st of March.  Earlier, the Central Bank informed the public to change such notes by today at the nearest licensed Commercial Bank branches. 

New selection committee of Sri Lanka cricket announced.

The new selection committee of Sri Lanka cricket has been announced with the approval of Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera. Graham Labroy is the new Chairman of the section committee and other members are  Gamini Wickrmasinghe, Gerry Vowters , Sajith Fernando and Asanka Gurusinghe. The new selection committee will nominate the Sri Lanka pool for the test tournament with the Pakistan team that will commence in the UAE next week.

A high level meeting of SAARC police officers will be held in Kathmandu in September.

A Shakya Janapadaya constructed in Pillyandala will be declared open by the President today.

A Shakya Janapadaya constructed in the extent of 75 acres in Pillyandala Kahapola area will be declared open by President Maithripala Sirisena today. The newly constructed structure will depict the ancient castles and other constructions during Lord Buddha's time. A special garden will also be declared open this morning. The whole construction work will be completed by 2018.

The 2nd test match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will commence tomorrow at P. Sara Stadium in Colombo.

Sri Lanka demoralize as South Africa make it 3 in row

South Africa beat Sri Lanka in the 3rd and final test by an innings and 118 runs.  With this win South Africa has clinched the series 3-0.  South Africa made 426 in their first innings.  Sri Lanka in reply made 131 in their first essay and were all out for 177 in their 2nd innings.
