Immediate steps are to be taken to prevent pollution of the Kandy Lake |

Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva has instructed the officials of the Irrigation Department to take immediate action to prevent pollution of water in the Kandy Lake.
He made these instructions at a meeting held this morning at the Kandy Irrigation Department Office. The discussions were held on a directive given by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. It was decided at the meeting to remove unauthorised structures around five input canal of the Lake. The Minister also instructed the official to take legal action against those who release waste material to the lake. The Minister made an inspection tour around the lake and found that certain tourist hotels and various institutions are directly releasing waste water to the lake. The Minister told the owners of these institutions that if they do not take action to purify the water released to the Lake steps will be taken to cancel their licences through the Sri Lanka Tourist Authority. The Minister told the discussions this morning that a project to purify water in the city of Kandy will be launched at a cost of 25,000 million rupees. |
