President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed a special committee consisting retired Supreme Court judge and few vice Chancellors of universities to inquire the issue which has risen in regard to the G.C.E. A-Level results. The committee is expected to give recommendations to minimize future chaotic situation in regard to the G.C.E. A-Level results.  Addressing a media briefing held in Colombo Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena said that the situation occurred due to a mistake of the computer system when preparing district ranks. The Minister insisted that no impact would be caused on grades and Z-scores of the issued results. He also denounced attempts of some quarters with vested interests who tried to gain petty advantages using this issue. The Minister also recalled that some university lecturers, who criticize the results, once threatened to refrain from marking the papers. The Minister also rejected the baseless allegations that some students have received irrelevant results. Commissioner General of the Examinations Anura Edirisinghe said that 142,000 students, who sat the exam under the new and old syllabi, have passed all three subjects of the examination. As a percentage it is 60 percent. The Commissioner General noted that 23,233 students have failed the all three subjects of the examination. Mr. Anura Edirisinghe also rejected the allegation that the government aims to cut free education. He added that the number of students who were eligible for university education has increased this year. The candidates can also apply to re-scrutinize the answer papers. The Examinations Chief further noted that no candidate is entitled to personally inquire his or her answer paper according to the Examinations Act. Minister S.B. Dissanayake, Deputy Minister Gamini Vijith Wijemuni Soyza, Secretary to the Ministry of Higher Education Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawarathne and Secretary to the Education Ministry H.M. Gunasekara were also present at the media briefing.
