The 7th SAARC film festival next week

Colombo, November 15, 2017: The seventh annual SAARC film festival will be held next week. The festival will begin next Tuesday and continue until the 25th of this month.

Organized by the Saarc Cultural Center of Sri Lanka, this year’s event also showcase films from all member countries, namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Films nominated by member countries in three categories will be screened in National Film Corporation Cinema Hall situated at Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07. Those include feature film, short film and master film. Entrance is free to the festival, and viewers will be admitted on first come first served basis.

At press briefing held today at Colombo, consultant to the festival Dhanushka Gunatilake said that the event also include a master class session on the 24th of this month at the Russian Cultural Center. This session allows film personnel, students and enthusiasts to interact with international experts.

Speaking on the occasion, chairman of the National Film Corporation Sitendra Senaratne said, they are proud to host cinematic excellence of, as much as, eight countries for five day festival. Mr.Setendra expressed his happiness to see a film from Maldives for the first time in a festival like this.

It has been observed that certain programmes include content that is contrary to local traditions. Experts in the field have requested the Ministry Of Finance And Media to take necessary steps to alleviate the damage caused to the local industry by the import of such material. Thereby, three gazette notifications containing charges for such imported programmes, have been cancelled. A new gazette will be released detailing charges that will come into effect from midnight today. According to the new charges, the present fee of 90 thousand rupees  which is charged  for a programme dubbed in Sinhala or Tamil which has  a duration of 30 minutes and spreads over not more than 4 series, will be increased to 150 thousand rupees. However, if the programmes are telecast in the original form, without being dubbed, the tax will not be applicable.

Sunil Ratnayake completes 30 years in Sri Lanka’s tele-drama industry. The only tele drama to win the most number of tele-drama awards, “Dandubasnamanaya”, was produced by him. Speaking of his humble beginnings and the 30-year journey Ratnayake reveals that his interest in video only began as a hobby while working as a civil engineer at the Highways Department. It was during this time that a documentary he had created on the Badulla district titled “Badulu Siriya” had caught the attention of the then Prime Minster Ranasinghe Premadasa who got him hired as a videographer, which later lead to his first tele-dramas “Ran Doratu” and the more popular “Bhagya”.
He received the coveted Prime Minister’s award for “Apey Gamata Kiri Uthurai” and the Environmental Day Award for the documentary film “Gasakin Kandulak”. He was the pioneer to introduce Digital 3D Animation in Sri Lanka. “Bhavathra”, Sri Lanka’s first ever science fiction TV series to use 3D character animation, was produced by him.

The 4th Asia Pacific Choir Games in Colombo

Colombo hosts The 4th Asia Pacific Choir Games this month. Presented by the Colombo Cultural Hub Trust, under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and INTERKULTUR of Germany, it is the first time an INTERKULTUR choir event will be held in South Asia. Some of the categories that these professional and amateur choirs will compete in are: Gospel, Spiritual, Jazz, Pop, Folklore, Acappella to name a few. Choirs from all over the Asia Pacific region, regardless of their present level of achievement, will have the opportunity to participate in an Open Competition.

A Unique Inter-Cultural Fusion of Choral Splendour will be showcased at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre on Thursday the 26th of October at 7.00pm.

In addition to competitive participation, choirs will have the opportunity to perform in Friendship Concerts with other choirs in public venues within Colombo. These public concerts are FREE OF CHARGE and will provide opportunities for each choir to share the musical traditions of their native land with other choirs and with the Sri Lankan public. A Concert featuring Sacred Music will be conducted at St Mary's Church Bambalapitiya on Thursday the 26th of October at 10.00am. Entrance is free. All are welcome.

“Big Bad Wolf”, the largest book fair in the world, now in Colombo.

 

The "Big Bad Wolf" Book Sale, billed as the world's biggest book sale, with 1.5 million books, is now open in Colombo.  It is aimed at encouraging the reading of English books at reasonable prices. This fair held at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre in Colombo, will be open 24 hours for eleven days, until the 15th of October. The 10th European Film Festival to be held next month

The 10th European film festival will be held  from the 13th to the 17th of next month at the Tharanganee Hall of the National Film Corporation. Master piece film collections from Germany, The Netherlands, the Check Republic, Britain, Slovakia, France, Italy, Poland, Switzerland and Romania will be featured at this exhibition.

Oscar nominee to perform in Sri Lanka for India@70

The SLBC launches children’s song CD.

The SLBC launches children’s songs CD. The CD is produced to improve aesthetic values of the children. The launch will take place at 2.30 pm tomorrow at Ananda Samarakoon studio of the SLBC. Deputy Minister Karunarathne Paranawithana and Chancellor of the University of Aesthetic Studies Prof. Sanath Nandasiri will take part at the event. The group song concert organized by the SLBC will be held on sunday

 

The “Gayana Geyum” group song concert presented by the Sinhala Welanda Sewaya of the SLBC to mark it’s golden jubilee anniversary celebration will be held at the BMICH tomorrow evening. The Welanda Sewaya has rendered a yeoman service to broadcast group songs in 70s for the interest of listeners. The group songs broadcast since several decades are now very much popular even at present. Seventeen groups including moonstones, Dharmaratne Sahodarayo, Three sisters will present their performance.

Two Australian classical musicians will hold a free concert in Colombo.

The Australian High Commission is to present two of Australia’s leading classical musicians in a free concert to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Australia-Sri Lanka bilateral relations. It will be held at Bishop’s College Auditorium at 7.00 pm on 24th of this month. Slava Grigoryan is a world famous classical guitarist and Sharon Draper a famous cellist will perform in this concert.
 
Slava has been the Artistic Director of the Adelaide International Guitar Festival since 2010. Sharon Draper has been the cellist with the Australian String Quartet since 2013, and has toured extensively with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Concert passes are free but limited. Passes can be collected from the Australian High Commission, 21, R.G. Senanayake Mawatha. Last minute passes may be available from 5pm on the day, at the concert venue. The 70th Anniversary is a partnership between the Australian and Sri Lankan Governments.

“Beauty and Beast”, will be staged at the University of Kelaniya today.

 

The stage drama, “Beauty and Beast”, directed by Professor of Emeritus Sunanda Mahendra will be staged at the Sri Dharmaloka Hall of University of Kelaniya at 6.30 pm today. The drama has been produced by the Department of Mass Communication as a project of teaching and learning.

SLBC marks the 50th anniversary on the 50th year of this month.

The corporation has organized a number of programmes to mark this event during the New Year.  The inaugural ceremony in this connection will be held on the 5th evening at the Kumarathunga studio under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe.

Scarlett Johansson named 'Top grossing' actor by Forbes

Scarlett Johansson has been named as the top grossing actor of 2016 by Forbes magazine. Her movies, including Captain America: Civil War and the Coen Brothers' Hail Caesar!, earned 1.2 billion US dollars globally over the past 12 months. Johansson's Marvel co-stars Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr tied for second place with 1.15 billion US dollars each. Last year, the list was topped by Chris Pratt while, in 2014, Jennifer Lawrence took the top honours. Forbes curates the annual list by adding up global ticket sales using data from analysis site Box Office Mojo.

Miss Puerto Rico crowned Miss World 2016

Stephanie del Valle of Puerto Rico has been crowned Miss World 2016 held at Oxon Hill in United States, edging out runners-up from the Dominican Republic and Indonesia, and beauties from around the globe.

Del Valle who is just 19 is a brown-eyed brunette student who speaks Spanish, English and French, and hopes to get into the entertainment industry. Crowned by Miss World 2015 Mireia Lalaguna of Spain, del Valle called it an "honor and a great responsibility" to represent her Caribbean homeland.

First runner-up was Yaritza Ramirez of the Dominican Republic, followed by Miss World Indonesia Natasha Mannuela.

An orphan girl at the Polonnaruwa children's home gets married with the blessings of the President.


A girl named Indrani Maduwanthi who rendered parentless due to terrorism and was looked after by the Parakum Children Home in Polonnaruwa started her marriage life today. She is 22 years old and her groom is 26 years old Priyantha Kumara of Vavuniya. It is significant that president Maithripala Sirisena attended the weeding on the part of the bride.

Mass brawl in Bangladesh over TV soap


An argument about a popular TV drama in Bangladesh erupted into a mass brawl involving hundreds of people, with 15 people badly injured. Villagers in Habiganj district had gathered in a cafe to watch Indian-made Bengali fantasy drama Kiranmala.
