A two week awareness programme to be conducted under the theme: "Preparedness Before Disaster Strikes"

A Minister of Water Resources and Disaster Management: Duminda Dissanayake says, the government is prepared to respond to emergencies that could occur with the onset of the South West Monsoons. A two week awareness programme will be conducted from the 22nd of this month to the third of next month under the theme: "Preparedness Before Disaster Strikes". Speaking at a media briefing held at his Ministry today the Minister said, the districts and the divisional secretariat zones that are most prone to disasters will be identified for this awareness programme to be carried out. Already, officials of such District Secretariats have been provided with equipment and basic financing to be used in the event of a disaster.

Director General of the National Building Research Organization: Asiri Karunawardane says, since the western slopes of the island will experience heavy falls, residents in these areas need to be vigilant. He added, around 15,000 families have been identified residing in risk-prone districts. Necessary steps have been taken to vacate them to safe places. He requests the public to pay special attention to earth-slip warnings aired over the media.
