Complaints regarding the forthcoming Local Government Polls, to be received via SMS

The citizenry will be provided with the opportunity of forwarding complaints regarding the forthcoming Local Government Polls, via SMS. The launch of this new mode will take place at the Elections Secretariat, tomorrow.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo today, Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya stated that explanations will be called from those who applied for postal voting, but refrained from casting their vote. He further stated that, when narrowed down to per voter cost, the Election's Commission spends 750 rupees for each postal vote. He added that the commission is looking into the possibility of implementing a mechanism of charging back this amount from those who do not have a valid reason for not casting their vote.

Focusing his attention on the 10th of February, which is the day on which the local government elections would be held, Mr Deshapriya emphasized that the use of mobile phones and cameras is totally prohibited at the polling booths. This prohibition is relevant to media personnel as well. The law will be strictly enforced against violators.
