The Czech President to visit Sri Lanka

Mrs. Priyanee Wijesekera, Ambassador Designate of Sri Lanka to the Czech Republic presented Credential to the President Miloz Ziman on 23rd August, 2016 at the office of the President in the Prague Castle.

Following the Credential Ceremony she met the President, Deputy Foreign Minister and Director of the Department of South Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The culprits posing as fishermen were trying to traffic gold using a small boat. Further investigations are being done by the officers of the customs department of Jaffna.

A ceasefire takes effect in Colombia

A ceasefire has come into effect in Colombia between the main leftist rebel group and the government, ending one of the world's longest insurgencies.
The ceasefire came after four years of peace talks in Cuba between the Farc and the government.
The final agreement on ending the 52-year-old war will be signed next month.
Farc leader Rodrigo Londono, known as Timoleon Jimenez or Timochenko, gave the order to stop firing.
"Never again will parents be burying their sons and daughters killed in the war,'' Timochenko told journalists. "All rivalries and grudges will remain in the past," he said.

UN Secretary General to visit SL on Wednesday.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will arrive in Sri Lanka on Wednesday as a part of his Asian tour, which begins tomorrow. On Wednesday evening, the UN Chief is scheduled to meet with President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and other members of the government as well as the Parliament.


Billionaire businessman abducted in Bambalapitiya found murdered.

The Police say the kidnapped billionaire businessman has been murdered. His body has been found at Rukulagama area situated along the Mawanella Hemmathagama road last night. The businessman was kidnapped at Bambalapitiya on the 21st of this month. The Magistrate inquiry will be held this morning. The body was found according to a complaint received by the Police Emergency Unit.

The Asian Bishops' Conference committee meeting will be held in Sri Lanka from the 28th November to the 4th of December in Negombo this year. Eight cardinals and 150 Bishops representing Asian region countries will attend .

Govt allocates Rs.4 billion to purchase paddy harvest of Yala season.


The government has approved 4 billion rupees to purchase the paddy harvest of the Yala season. The paddy marketing board says the process will commence next week. Signing of agreements with banks in this regard is now being taken place.


The Prime Minister visited Guyang Harbour in Chongi Metro City.


Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe and the Sri Lankan delegation visited the Guyang Harbour and the container terminal in Chongi Metro city, in China. This container terminal started its operations in 2013. Its constructions will be completed in 2018.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe will engage in an observation visit to South Western China from tomorrow to the 17th of this month. The delegation led by the Premier will visit number of places that contribute to the economic development of China including industrial zones, container terminals, technological parks and financial centers.

UNESCO Director-General to Pay First Official Visit to Sri Lanka

Senior Journalist Elmo Fernando passed away at his residence early today. He was 75. Elmo Fernando who joined the SLBC in 1967 displayed his talents as a popular announcer, a news caster and a programme producer as well as a news reporter.

107 Ayurvedic doctors are to be recruited. Commissioner of Ayurveda L.H.Thilakarathne says the government has already given its approval in this regard. The interviews will be held from Thursday to Saturday.

President Maithripala Sirisena has congratulated the Sri Lanka Cricket Team of gaining victory of Test cricket series against Australia for the first time in history.  The Sri Lanka cricket team received this historic victory defeating Australia at the match played at Galle International Stadium.


One dead and several injured in London kniife attack.

A woman has died and five others were injured in a knife attack in Russell Square, central London. Police and ambulance crews were called around 10.30 pm yesterday local time, to reports of a man in possession of a knife and injuring people. Up to six injured people were found at the scene; one woman was pronounced dead a short time later. The man was arrested after a taser was discharged by one of the arresting officers. The Metropolitan Police say Terrorism is one possible motive being explored. (BBC)

Director of School activities of the ministry of education W.K.M. Wijetunga says relevant interviews to admit Grade one students to national schools for next year will commence tomorrow. Relevant interview boards will be appointed by the principals and should obtain approval from the education ministry for it.


An amended program of providing concessionary vehicle permits for public officers.


Cabinet approval has been granted for the reintroduction of an amended program of providing concessionary vehicle permits for public officers. Accordingly, a permit holder will be entitled to a 50 percent waiver on all taxes payable on an imported vehicle valued up to 30,000 US dollars.
