Nobel Peace Prize for Colombia's President

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end the 52-year conflict with left-wing rebels.

The Nobel committee in Norway praised him for his peace agreement with Farc rebels, signed last month after four years of negotiations.The conflict has killed about 260,000 people. More than six million have been internally displaced.

Second phase of the central express way will begin tomorrow.


Construction of the second stage of the central expressway will begin tomorrow. Foundation stone for the construction will be laid at the Giriulla area tomorrow morning under the patronage of minister Lakshman Kiriella. Parliamentarian Jayantha Samaraweera arrested today by the FCID. Mr. Samaraweera was arrested after a making statement at the FCID. The arrest was made over charges that Samaraweera misused vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat during the previous government’s regime.The arrested MP is due to be produced before the Fort Magistrate today.

Five convicts including Duminda Silva sentenced to death over killing of Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra.

The Colombo High Court has imposed death sentences on Former MP Duminda Silva and four others who were found guilty in the case involving killing of four persons including Bharatha Laksman Premachandra.

Accordingly, Anura Thusara de Mel, Chaminda Ravi Jayanath, Janaka Bandara Galagoda and Sarath Bandara are also sentenced to death by the panel of judges.

Mr. Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra was killed in Kolonnawa at 8th of October 2011 during a shooting incident. The case involving this killing was continued for more than one and half years.

The judgement was given by a special panel of High Court Judges including Shiran Gunaratne, Padmini Ranawaka and M.C.B.S.Morayas.

The panel was divided on the judgement; the chairman of the panel Shiran Gunaratne acquitted all suspects while others decided to impose death sentences on the convicts.

Attack on Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Malaysia

 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed reports that Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to Malaysia had been assaulted by a group of persons at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport today, 4 September 2016.

The Government of Sri Lanka condemns this act of violence on Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Malaysia, in the strongest terms.

The High Commissioner is receiving medical attention.
