Parliamentarian Rohini Kumari Wijerathne says it is the UNP that empowered women in the country.

Parliamentarian Rohini Kumari Wijerathne says that the real aim of fighting against corruption can only be fulfilled by electing more women candidates for the local government bodies at the upcoming polls.


The JVP leader says, only uncorrupted candidates with good qualities should be elected to local government institutions.

JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissnayake says that a strong public movement against corruption should be established in the country. At a press briefing held in Colombo today he said, disciplined and honest candidates with unblemished character should be elected to the local government institutions.  He further said that not a single JVP candidate can be accused of frauds or corruption.

A group of volunteer and contract basis teachers in the northern province will be made permanent.

Volunteer and contract basis teachers in the northern province will be given permanent appointments. The distribution of appointment letter will be held at the temple trees on the 15th of this month.


The 70th Independence Day is marked in a grand manner

President Maithripala Sirisena stresses the need to strengthen the identity of the Sri Lankan people. He says the government has given priority to identify and address national challenges, including the elimination of poverty. Addressing the nation at the 70th Independence Day ceremony that was held in a grand manner at Galle face, the President said the outdated financial and other regulations needed to be amended without delay. He called on all politicians to exercise honesty and commitment in overcoming national challenges. He added that the true meaning of freedom meant not only for humans, but also for other animals and the environment.  
The President pays last respects to the late Professor Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thera.

President Maithripala Sirisena this afternoon visited Bellanwila Raja Maha Vihara and paid last respects to the late Venerable Professor Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thera. The president extended condolences to the nation over the bereavement of the revered and scholarly top prelate of the temple.

Large numbers of mourners are arriving to pay their last respects to the Thera who passed away yesterday. The cremation will take place at the Sri Jayewardenepura University grounds on Thursday afternoon with state patronage.

War-time voluntary and contract teachers in the North are to be given job permanency

Voluntary and contract teachers who served in schools in the North during the war are to be given job permanency. The office of the Northern Province governor says 324 teachers will accordingly be given appointment letters at Temple Trees on February 15th. They will be integrated to the classes two and three of Sri Lanka Teachers' Service.

The first Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh ends in a draw


The first Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh ended in a draw in Chittagong today. When the game was called off, Bangladesh were 307 for five wickets in their second innings. Mominul Haque became the first Bangladeshi batsman to score centuries in each innings of a test match. Liton Das also made 94. In bowling, Rangana Herath captured two wickets for 80 runs. Sri Lanka declared their first innings at 713 for nine, in reply to Bangladesh's first essay of 513.

Sri Lanka Celebrates the 70th Independence Day today. The main function will be held at the Galle Face Green under the title "One Nation" under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena. Prince Edward and Princess will take part in this event as special guests. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, Ministers and Parliamentarians and foreign diplomats will also participate in this event

Independence Day Messages


President Maithripala Sirisena in his Independence Day message said that if one is to truly fathom the value of independence, it is essential to understand the pain being oppressed and subservient in the face of a foreign power. This is why we are grateful to all our heroes who sacrificed their lives in order to restore and sustain our nation’s independence. On a day like today, when the value of freedom is commemorated, the nation pays tribute to its true patriots whose contribution to our motherland was invaluable. He adds that as Sri Lanka celebrates seven decades of independence, it is appropriate to reflect on how far we have come as a nation. In terms of achieving human development, and various social, economic, and political challenges we were faced with, the progress we have ahieved over this period is laudable.

In the Independence Day Message Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasingeh said that this year, we celebrate 70 years of independence from colonial rule. It is an occasion for us to remember that we were only able to achieve independence with the participation of all communities coming together towards a common goal. It is our responsibility to keep in mind that true independence is only possible when we can unite as one nation, rising above political, religious and ethnic differences. Only then is independence truly significant and meaningful to all. Freedom is fulfilled when human dignity and spiritual liberty is attained - in addition to social, political and economic freedom.

Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan in his Independence Day message said that with gratitude to our forefathers who fought for independence. We are at a crucial juncture of our history as we celebrate seventy years of Independence. As a country, we have not been able to enjoy the true benefits of the independence in the past.

Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangalabhidhana Mahanayake Thero, Malwatte Chapter said that Sri Lanka lost its independence when it became a British Colony in 1815 following the Kandyan Convention. It is time for us today to reexamine whether we have been able to make the hard-won national independence more meaningful.

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith Archbishop of Colombo issuing a message for the Independence Day said that today we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of our national independence. When we look back as to how our ancestors and politicians of the early periods fought for national independence with tooth and nail, today we see corruption, theft and fraud eating into the national fabric like a cancer.

Al Sheikh M.M. A Mubarak, General Secretary, All Ceylon Jammiyyathul Ulama said that we have faced a series of challenges when we are marking the 70th anniversary of national independence today. The President says that he has already decided to make some changes after the 10th of this month

President Maithripala Sirisena says that he has already decided to make some changes after the 10th of this month. The president also said that measures will be taken for the economic management in the country and to provide solutions to the increasing of cost of living of the people. Several important decisions will be taken for the development of local industry as well as the agricultural sector in the country.
He made these remarks at a public rally held in Bandaragama yesterday. We should be go forward as a country but should not be set back. The present government had to face several economic issues due to huge debt burden. The president has also pointed out that the former president is requesting the power from the people to form a government again to go back the country again and to create nepotism governance. He said although several parties created, no one can destroy the SLFP as it is a people's party.

Today is the final day of the first test against Bangladesh


Today is the 5th and last day of the 1st test match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka being played in Chittagong. Sri Lanka declared the innings after 713 runs for the loss of 9 wickets.  Bangladesh scored 81 runs for 3 wickets at the end of the day at their 2nd innings at the close of play yesterday. Bangladesh scored 513 runs for all out in their 1st innings. 

World Leaders congratulate the president on the occasion of the 70th national independence day.

Several world leaders have sent their Congratulatory messages to President Maithripala Sirisena on the occasion of the country's 70th National Independence Day. The Queen Elizabeth II of the Great Britain in her message says that the relationship between the two countries has continued to grow, and it is her hope that the connections between our people continue to flourish in the years to come.

Venerable Bellanvila Wimalarathana thera has demised.

The Venerable Bellanvila Wimalarathana Thera who had been admitted to the Colombo south Teaching Hospital Kalubowila and subsequently transferred to a private hospital in Colombo following an accident, has passed away. He was the chancellor of the Sri Jayawardhanapura Universtiy.

Buddhist religious programes prior to the independence day celebrations begin today.

The religious programmes in line with the 70th independence day celebrations will begin today. Accordingly an all-night pirith chanting ceremony will be held at the independence square in Colombo.  The chanting of pirith will be live broadcast by Sinhala national service of the SLBC from 9.30 pm to 4.45 am tomorrow.  An alms giving will be offered to Maha Sangha tomorrow morning at the Sri Lanka Vidyalaya Piriven in Maradana.
