President Mahinda Rajapakse was engaged in an abrupt tour in the village Kumarawatta, located in a most remote area in the district of Moneragala. The village with the least amount of facilities is placed on the highest altitude in the district. 800 Tamil families are living in the village. Their source of living is plucking Tea leaves. President Rajapakse has focussed special attention on the infrastructure facilities and shortcomings in the village. He was involved in a amicable discussion with the villagers. The attention of the president was focused on the shortages in electricity and drinking water. The President has instructed officials including chief minister of the Uva Province Shasindra Rajapakse to immediately look into the shortcomings and resolve their problems.
A student of the Maragala Tamil Vidyalaya told the President that 11 out of the 17 students of the school who sat for the G.C.E. O/Level examination have passed the examination. The president has expressed his satisfaction on the success of the educational activities of the school and instructed the officials to further enhance facilities. It has also been reported that this was the first occasion a head of state visited the village. The President is scheduled to vest in the ownership of the general public the newly constructed pilgrims’ facility in Sellakatharagama today. The government has spent nearly 240 million rupees on the construction. The business establishments carried out in a haphazard manner have been streamlined. Accordingly, 160 new business centres have been established.
Director of the Uva Province Urban Development Authority M.P.Ranathunga says the Katharagama town will also be developed in a similar manner.
