The UNDP launched the 2011 Human Development Report titled "sustainability and equity. A better future for all" this morning in Colombo. The 2011 report includes HDI ranking of 187 countries. Sri Lanka has been ranked 97th in the world and the first in South Asia. Sri Lanka's Human Development Index has progressively increased upto 0.691 in 2011 compared to 0.658 in 2010. This year's report focuses on the on the challenge of sustainable and equitable progress. The report says that environmental sustainability can be most fairly and effectively achieved by addressing health, education, income and gender disparities together with the need for global action on energy production and ecosystem protection. It identifies indoor air pollution, climate change and inadequate access to clean water and sanitation as key environmental threats to human development.

Addressing the occasion intellectuals pointed out that Sri Lanka is a least carbon emitting country in the world. Addressing the event minister of environment Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that the government has given the priority for rural development in order to achieve a balanced regional development.
