Director General of the Media Centre for National Security Lakshman Hulugalle says Mr. Sarath Fonseka was arrested according to the military law. The main charge against him is the breaching of military discipline and law. Mr. Hulugalle adds that the military police arrested him last night according to the military tribunal procedure of reading before him the relevant charge sheet.
Mr. Fonseka is reported to have created political divisions within the army, by engaging in discussions with political leaders, while functioning as the army commander and the chief of defence staff. According to the army law, a person engaged in military service is subjected to the military law during the period such a person is engaged in duties and until three years after retirement. The director general adds therefore that it is possible to arrest Mr. Fonseka at any time during this period for violating the law, by presenting a charge sheet. Clear evidence has been presented regarding the conspiracy carried out against the present government and the President. Accordingly, the army has arrested Mr. Fonseka. Although the defence secretary, navy commander, and the air force commander have contributed for the success of the war in the north by arriving at battle front,Mr. Fonseka has not followed such procedure. Mr. Hulugalla says what Mr. Fonseka had done was to merely go to the Wanni defence headquarters to examine maps and to deliver a lecture. He wanted to receive massive media publicity through these actions. The director general further says the military victory has taken place while Mr. Fonseka was engaged in a family tour in China according to the high cope transactions. The masses have already decided who actually liberated the country. The people have accepted the fact that the President and the Defence secretary are the genuine war heroes. An impact has been created on the country as well as on the army as a result of statements made by Mr. Fonseka. Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe has to go before the head of the United Nations Human Rights Chief to present facts due to the statements of Mr. Fonseka. Mr. Hulugalle adds that the victory achieved through the direct contribution of the President and the Defence secretary has become a momentous victory as this victory was recorded while keeping with them conspirators like Fonseka. Participating in the “Rata Yana Atha” programme of the national radio this morning, he further said that war victories have been obtained due to the skills of the youth who came from the villages. The director general also said Fonseka is a conspirator who received commissions by maintaining businesses. |
